Authenticity Industrial Complex

Duolingo's mascot, Duo, threatens users with violence for skipping their Spanish lesson. Millions of people laughed. Marketing journalists and agencies called it genius (and still do). Honestly, we liked it too. In many conference rooms across the world, strategists opened new decks with the words:

'Be more unhinged.'

For most of modern advertising history, the dominant mode was aspiration. Brands showed you the life you could have if you bought the thing. Clean cars, whiter teeth, kitchens where nobody actually cooked. It worked for decades, and then it stopped working around the time social platforms handed everyone a camera and a publishing button, making the gap between the gleaming ad and the actual product too obvious to maintain.

The industry's answer was to pivot to realness. Imperfect photography, unfiltered captions. Founders posting their 5 AM routines. Brands "admitting" their flaws before a journalist could. The logic made sense:

If people trust real over polished, start manufacturing real.

Which is, if you think bout it for a second, the most perfectly self-defeating sentence in the history of communication.

A 2023 Edelman study found that 88 percent of consumers globally say authenticity is a key factor in deciding which brands to support. That study is now quoted extensively as justification for authentic marketing campaigns. A research report about human trust, being deployed to help brands simulate the conditions under which trust forms. The snake has found its tail and decided it looks delicious.

For creative leaders, this creates a specific, largely unspoken professional problem. Your entire training is built on the idea that good work tells the truth about something. The most compelling creative decisions come from a real point of view that no one else could have. And now you are being asked to engineer that quality on a production schedule, for clients who want the feeling of realness without the inconvenience of actually being it.

The 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer recorded its largest single-year drop in 25 years.

People are not just skeptical right now. They are tired. Tired of trying to figure out what is real.

That is the room your work now walks into every time it ships.

Genuine authenticity is almost always expensive. It says things that cost you clients. Takes positions that some people in the room will push back on. Patagonia declining to run Black Friday sales is authentic because it costs them revenue. A fast-fashion brand launching a "conscious collection" while growing its core inventory by 40 percent is not authentic. It is a product extension dressed in the vocabulary of values. Most people can smell the difference, even if they cannot always name it.

The creatives most at risk here are not the ones doing obviously cynical work. They know what they are doing, and so does everyone else.

The ones at risk are the emerging creatives who enter this industry genuinely wanting to make honest work, spend a few years inside systems that have learned to weaponize the language of honesty, and come out the other side no longer quite sure where their actual voice is.

That particular form of professional damage is quiet and widespread, and the industry does not talk about it.

There is research on what happens when people perform an identity they do not actually hold. The cognitive dissonance does not stay contained to the professional context. The performance becomes a habit. Eventually, you stop noticing the gap between what you actually think and what you say you think, because the gap has been there long enough to feel like normal.

The creative professionals who will matter are not the ones who master the performance of authenticity. They are the ones who are clear enough about who they are that clients come looking for that clarity specifically. Not for a simulation of a real perspective.

For the actual one. That is a "one of none" position. It cannot be bought or briefed into existence.

The Authenticity Industrial Complex is not slowing down. The question worth asking is whether you are one of its products or one of the people who can still tell what is real.
